Meridian Laredo Asphalt Paving serves San Ygnacio, TX with grading and excavation, driveway paving, and drainage built for Zapata County clay soils and Rio Grande flood exposure - with responses within one business day and no charge for the on-site estimate.

San Ygnacio sits on clay-heavy soils and caliche hardpan, and getting grade right before any surface goes down is what determines whether that surface lasts five years or twenty. Our grading and excavation work in this area includes breaking through caliche where needed, establishing proper drainage slope, and compacting the base to a standard that holds up to south Texas soil movement and heat.
Many properties in San Ygnacio have dirt or caliche driveways that were originally adequate for light traffic but have since become difficult to maintain as vehicles get heavier and use increases. We install asphalt driveways that are properly based for clay soils in Zapata County - surfaces that do not rut, wash out, or crack apart after the first summer.
Properties near the Rio Grande in San Ygnacio face flood exposure that most homeowners elsewhere in Texas never deal with. We design drainage into every paving and grading project here, directing water away from structures and toward appropriate outlets rather than letting it pool around foundations and damage surfaces that took real money to install.
Summers in Zapata County push well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and asphalt without a protective sealer oxidizes and goes brittle faster than in most other climates. Sealcoating every two to three years protects the binder that holds the pavement together and keeps a paved surface functional for years longer than one that goes unsealed.
Clay soils in this area shrink and swell with every rain and dry spell, and that movement opens cracks in even well-installed pavement over time. Sealing those cracks quickly is the single most cost-effective maintenance step available - it keeps water out of the base and prevents small surface cracks from widening into something that needs full-depth repair.
When heavy rains come to this part of south Texas - even briefly - they can expose weaknesses in poorly based pavement quickly, turning surface cracks into open potholes. We repair potholes in the San Ygnacio area by removing the failed section down to stable material, addressing the base, and patching in a way that holds through future weather cycles rather than reopening within the next season.
San Ygnacio is one of the oldest towns in Zapata County, with a history going back to 1830 and a building stock that ranges from 19th-century sandstone structures to mid-20th-century concrete block homes and newer residential construction along U.S. Highway 83. That mix of old and new means property types here vary more than in most small towns - some homeowners are working with driveways and yards adjacent to historic sandstone walls, while others have standard South Texas ranch-style homes on modest lots with no existing paved access. The one thing most properties have in common is that the ground underneath presents real challenges: clay soils that move with every weather cycle, caliche hardpan just below the surface, and proximity to the Rio Grande that makes drainage planning a necessity rather than an afterthought.
Climate plays a direct role in how quickly any paved surface ages here. Summers regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with sustained heat that breaks down asphalt binder and dries out any sealer not properly maintained. Annual rainfall is low but tends to arrive in intense bursts - when it comes, it comes fast, and flat terrain with limited drainage infrastructure does not handle it easily. According to FEMA, properties near the Rio Grande in Zapata County can be within flood hazard areas, and any paving or grading work near the riverbank needs to account for that exposure. A contractor who has not worked in communities along this stretch of the river will miss things that matter.
Our crew works throughout San Ygnacio regularly, and we understand the local conditions that affect asphalt paving work here. Because San Ygnacio is an unincorporated community in Zapata County with no city permit office, projects that affect county roads go through Zapata County, and we handle that coordination for our customers. If your project is purely on private property - a driveway, a yard pad, or a graded lot - that process is typically straightforward, but we confirm the requirements for every job before work begins.
Getting to San Ygnacio from Laredo means heading south on U.S. Highway 83 - about 30 miles of two-lane highway through ranch country. We know that route well and plan equipment delivery around it. Properties in town range from compact residential lots in the older part of town near the San Ygnacio Historic District to larger parcels on the edge of town. The historic sandstone buildings in the district are not a paving target, but the surrounding properties and access routes are, and we work carefully in areas where those old structures and their foundations are nearby.
We also serve the community of Zapata just down the highway to the southeast, and other communities throughout this stretch of Zapata County. If you are anywhere in the area between San Ygnacio and Falcon Lake, we make the drive and we come to you at no charge for the estimate.
Phone us or fill out the estimate form on this page. We respond within one business day - not a week later. There is no charge for the visit and no pressure to commit before you have a written number in hand.
We drive to your San Ygnacio property and assess the terrain, soil conditions, existing surfaces, and drainage situation. The written quote reflects your actual property - including what it will take to properly prepare the ground given the clay and caliche conditions here - so there are no surprises when work starts.
Once you approve the quote, we schedule a start date and arrive prepared for the job. For grading and excavation work in this area, that means equipment capable of cutting caliche and handling clay soils that behave differently wet versus dry. You do not need to be on-site the entire time, but we keep you informed.
Before we leave, we walk the finished work with you, cover how the drainage is set up, and explain what ongoing maintenance the surface needs to hold up in Zapata County conditions. You leave with a clear picture of what was done and what to expect going forward.
We serve San Ygnacio and Zapata County communities along U.S. Highway 83. Free on-site estimate, no trip fee, response within one business day.
(956) 539-8790San Ygnacio is a census-designated place in Zapata County on the banks of the Rio Grande, about 30 miles south of Laredo along U.S. Highway 83. It is the oldest town in Zapata County, settled in 1830 by families from what is now Tamaulipas, Mexico. The town survived the creation of Falcon Lake in the early 1950s - when Falcon Dam flooded several nearby communities - because residents successfully petitioned to remain in place. The oldest part of town, between the river and the highway, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the San Ygnacio Historic District, recognized as the last large collection of 19th-century Mexican ranch-style sandstone architecture still standing in the United States. Among those structures is the Treviño-Uribe Rancho, known locally as Fort Treviño, a fortified sandstone home built in 1830 that is one of the best-preserved historic properties along the entire length of the Rio Grande.
Alongside the historic district, San Ygnacio also has more recent residential construction - modest single-family homes built from the mid-20th century onward, many of concrete block with metal roofing. The economy in Zapata County has historically relied on ranching, oil and gas, and fishing and hunting around Falcon Lake to the southeast. We serve customers throughout this area and the stretch of Highway 83 connecting San Ygnacio to its neighbors, including the community of Zapata down the road toward the lake, and other communities in this part of Zapata County. If your property is anywhere along this stretch of the highway or out on the ranch land surrounding town, we are familiar with the area and we make the drive.
